The importance of performing health grooms
Most companion animals require some degree of grooming for basic health and comfort. It's important to practice grooming techniques on your pets to keep them healthy, prevent pain and discomfort.
Effects of soiled and matted fur on your pet
Matted fur pulls the skin and causes pain to your pet when they move or lay in their beds. It prevents air circulating to the skin which can cause hot spots, bacterial and fungal infections. Parasites such as fleas, ticks and maggots will love to settle under matted fur causing yet more irritation and discomfort. Matted fur will not dry properly causing pain and discomfort to your pet.
The purpose of a health groom
To remove soiled and matted fur, including a thorough groom/de-shed of your pet's remaining coat. A dry shampoo may also be applied.
Most animals moult all the time with excess moulting occurring in the spring and autumn. It's important to remove the moulting coat to prevent mats occurring.
For long haired cats I can offer a sanitary groom which will include removal of soiled/matted fur around the rear end.
Regular lion cuts are also a good way to prevent a build-up of matted fur. Also with added benefit of being a lot cooler in the warmer months of the year.
Trimming off the fur from around the top of the paw and in-between the toes will help prevent matting and discomfort for your pet whilst walking or running.
Keeping your pets free from excess fur around the body and feet will help prevent grass seeds becoming embedded into your dog's skin, causing painful tracts, leading to potential infection.
